About the test

What is the CAT4?

The Cognitive Abilities Test, fourth edition (CAT4), is a reasoning assessment from GL Assessment used by international, independent and a growing number of state schools. Unlike subject exams, CAT4 measures how a child reasons — verbally, quantitatively, non-verbally and spatially.

Children who do well on CAT4 are not necessarily smarter than others. They are more familiar with the question types and the timed, on-screen format. Qualificant is built for exactly that.

Coverage

The four CAT4 batteries

Qualificant practice covers every battery your child will face on test day.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal classification and verbal analogies — testing word relationships and language logic.

Quantitative Reasoning

Number analogies and number series — testing pattern logic and numeric reasoning.

Non-verbal Reasoning

Figure classification and figure matrices — language-free pattern reasoning.

Spatial Reasoning

Figure analysis and figure recognition — visualising shapes in space.

Why Qualificant

Most CAT4 prep is static. Qualificant is a real simulation.

See exactly how a Qualificant CAT4 simulation compares to the printable PDFs and untimed quizzes most platforms still ship.

FAQ

CAT4 practice — parent questions answered

What is the CAT4?
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) from GL Assessment measures four reasoning abilities — verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial. Schools use it to understand how a child learns, not what they have memorised.
Why does CAT4 practice matter if it’s a reasoning test?
Reasoning ability is real, but performance on a timed test is also a skill. Familiarity with question types, pacing, and on-screen format reliably lifts scores by reducing surprise and anxiety.
Is Qualificant CAT4 practice timed?
Yes. Every CAT4 simulation runs under the same time pressure as the real assessment, so your child practises pacing as well as accuracy.
Which CAT4 levels do you cover?
Practice content is calibrated for the level commonly sat at ages 10–12 (Levels X and Y), with question difficulty banded across easy, medium and hard.
Will my child see explanations?
Yes — every question includes a clear, age-appropriate explanation so the reasoning skill itself improves, not just the score.
